Week 12: Contemporary Manga
This week we read Silver Spoon by Hiromu Arakawa. This manga was quite unique, nothing like I have read or seen before, a manga based around an agricultural school. When I saw the topic, I didn't think I would like it, but I found myself enjoying it more and more as I kept reading on.
Before reading the book, I didn't think a manga based an agricultural school would be interesting. However, on the first page I quickly felt like I could relate. The first thing we are shown is the scenery, it is a beautiful country side that is untouched by civilization. The text describes this place as: "The endless expanse of mother nature. This is where we will discover what it means to live...and what it means to be given life..." and I resonated with that a lot. My goal after graduating is to move to Colorado and experience mountain ranges and the beautiful landscape. Being in Sarasota for a few years, it definitely has given me a sense of the city and now I just want to get a sense of nature and to be able to reflect on my life.
The main character Hachiken is a new first year to this agricultural school in Hokkaido. He doesn't know anything about farming, and finds himself grossed out by a chicken pooping an egg and the killing of the chicken. He is disgusted and refused to even think about it until his hunger was too much. Hachiken loved the egg, and couldn't believe the chicken provided something so beautiful. A recurring theme for Hachiken seems to be not to judge something, before you try it. Previously he didn't like the idea of killing the chicken, but when he tried the fried chicken, he loved the fresh taste of it. The more I thought about Hachiken, I saw some of the same stuff as he did and I started to put this theme to myself too. Previously I did not think I would like Silver Spoon, but here I am, enjoying reading the manga.
Silver Spoon is a great manga and you can easily get involved into the characters. Hachiken and his classmates all have a unique character development. I really enjoyed getting evovled into the characters and look forward to continue reading the chapters.
